Faculty of Computer Systems and Networks

Dean: Ass. Prof. Valery Prytkov

History of the Faculty starts with the Faculty of Automatics and Calculating Machines which have been founded at Minsk Radioengeneering Institute. The first group of 26 students graduated from the University in December 1964 with speciality "Calculating Machines". In 1980 on the basis of the Faculty was formed our predecessor - the Faculty of Computer Engineering. In 1995 the Faculty was renamed into the Faculty of Computer Systems and Networks. Now the Faculty has more than 180 lecturers, including 16 Professors, and more than 90 Doctors.

The Faculty has 6 departments:
- Electronic Computers (graduating department)
- Information Technologies Software (graduating department)
- Informatics (graduating department)
- Higher Mathematics (basic department)
- Physics (basic department)
- Philosophy (basic department).

Speciality "Software for information technologies"
The student receives the qualification of engineer-programmer. Graduates in this speciality acquire knowledge in directions:
- Modern programming languages and applied programs (Object Pascal, C++, Prologue, Assembler, Delphi, Visual C++, J Builder, MATLAB, MathCAD);
- Graphic systems and multimedia (3D Studio Max, Photoshop);
- Internet technologies (HTML, XML, Java, JavaScript, PHP);
- Networks, distributed processing systems;
- Operation systems;
- Bank computer systems and integrated packages (1C, etc.);
- Modern technologies of software development, quality and reliability management of programs, CASE technologies (IBM Rational Rose, BPwin, ERwin, WinRunner);
- Information systems and technologies, bases of data and knowledge, database management systems (IBM Lotus Notes, MS SQL Server);
- Real-time systems, information protection systems, systems of control and diagnostics.

Speciality "Computers, Systems and Networks"
The student becomes the specialist with high level of integrated knowledge and skills in the field of hardware and its software design, and gets the qualification of system engineer. Graduates in this speciality acquire knowledge in the field of computer technique hardware:
- System engineering;
- Structural and functional organization of computers;
- Microprocessor-based devices and systems;
- igh-efficiency processors architecture;
- Peripheral devices of calculating machines;
- Computer complexes, systems and networks.
In the field of programming and software students learn technologies of software design, computer systems and complexes, receive certain skills in programming languages Assembler, C, C++, Java, Visual C++, Delphi, Perl, HTML, SQL etc. Learning of methods and means of development of applied and system programming is based the use on the theory and in practice of modern operational systems (Windows, UNIX, Linux, etc.).

Speciality "Informatics"
The student receives deep knowledge of operating systems (Windows, UNIX, Linux) and is prepared for software development using various programming languages and modern design technologies (UML, Rational Rose, Erwin, etc.). Graduates have high level of knowledge of database management systems (Access, SQL, Oracle). Close cooperation of the Department of Informatics with the biggest software corporations in Belarus (EPAM Systems, IBA) has allowed to modify programs on the basis of advanced technologies and to make graduates ready for real work as much as possible. The training-center that is working at the Department with the sponsor help of EPAM Systems specialists organizes facultative studying for students of .NET, Java technologies, and modern technologies of software testing.

The main mission of the Department of Informatics is to give students a strong base of fundamental education. This mission is realized during the preparation by traditional programming and special mathematical courses. In the near future the filial branch of the Department in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will be opened.

Professional portrait of the Faculty graduate:
Graduates of the Faculty can work as programmers in organizations developing special and system software, development and management of databases, distributed processing systems, software for financial systems. They have deep knowledge in the field of operational systems (Windows/UNIX) and are well prepared for the problem solutions:
- Creation of the software using the programming languages (Assembler, C, Delphi, Visual BASIC, Visual C++, Java, etc.);
- Development of effective databases structures and systems of electronic document management on the basis of Access, Lotus Notes, Oracle, etc.;
- Development of Internet-applications on the basis of HTML, JavaScript, Java, XML, CORBA;
- System software maintenance;
- Use of modern programs verification software, estimations of their reliability and security.
Reputation of Faculty is proved by the participation in the INTAS international project, grants of the prestigious international organizations, membership in international engineering academies IEEE and IEE.

Departments of the Faculty maintain close cooperation with many foreign centres of science - Brunel University, University of Greenwich (United Kingdom), Technical University of Berlin, Ilmenau University of Technology, University of Paderborn (Germany), Paris Sorbonne University (France), University of Milan (Italy), Bialystok Polytechnic University (Poland), etc.

The Faculty is actively working on opening a new speciality "Information Security in Corporate Networks", and new specializations: "Systems of Data Security", "Modelling and Computer Design of Hardware-Software Complexes".

Students Council of the Faculty is effectively supervising all aspects of student's life. It organizes free time of students and teaching activity of senior students in topical subjects.
